Adelina Patti was married three times, first to De Caux, whom she divorced to marry Nicolini, her second husband, and after Nicolini’s death she married Baron Rolf Cederstrom. Of her affair with Nicolini, which took place while she was married to De Caux, her first husband initially had no suspicion. However it soon became apparent that Patti was Juliette to her Romeo in more than mere operatic fiction.“Though receiving anonymous warnings regarding Nicolini, De Caux dismissed them as malicious gossip. What finally aroused his suspicion was his wife’s newfound delight in singing with Nicolini and her unbridled enthusiasm for him. Nicolini’s actions in the balcony scene of Romeo et Juliette during a public performance confirmed De Caux’s suspicions: he kissed Patti twenty-one times, fifteen more than the libretto stipulated.”
